Van Hove singularities in Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes

The energy dispersion diagram and density of states calculated for a (5,5) and a (10,0) single-wall carbon nanotube. For the metallic nanotube (5,5), the energy difference between the first Van Hove singularities has been indicated with Esub

Silicon band structure.

Comparison of Germanium and Tin band structure. Tin has a 0 eV gap.

InSb band structure.

In 1954, Dresselhaus, Kip and Kittel reported the first measurements of effective masses in silicon, using the basic cyclotron resonance technique that is, by applying a magnetic field and long-wavelength (microwave) radiation to a silicon sample and looking for peaks in radiation absorption such as those shown in Figure. To get the light through the sample it was required that the sample be thin and have a sufficiently low carrier density; increasingly conductive samples suffered depolarization and attenuation. Samples used were therefore 3mm x 0.5mm, made by cutting and etching from larger single crystals. Samples were mounted on a rotating base to enable study as a function of crystal orientation.
